To the Guests who have decided to register for Membership. PLEASE read Terms of Service, not just checking it off. This is covered there: Add more info than just "hunting" or "Upland hunting" or "birds" or "outdoors" or similar nebulous terms in the required INTERESTS field. Despite this Boards strong spam filtering function, some Spam registrations do sneak through. I need an inkling that you are a human being not a Spam Bot tagging onto key words. Went to Photobucket tonight and logged in--the old version is no longer available.

I really don't like the new one at all, so I guess I'll decide If I can live with it or look for a new host.  In particular I don't like the fact that you can no longer float the cursor over a picture and get the link code.  In addition to that taking longer, the newer version takes longer to load, but that may be because it's in Beta.

What the hell, I don't pay anything for it so I can't complain much.

Here's part of the response I got when I emailed:

Please note that I am but a humble, automated robot whose sole mission it is to please you. If my response didn't address your concerns, please write back with what you need, and that you'd like to speak with of my human counterparts, and they'll be sure to get you the personalized assistance that you need.

Thank you,

Tom, I know that's what you use.  I often check the EXIF data on your pics.  I'm sure using Smugmug will make my photos as brilliant as yours.  By the way, the pic of the flying chukar in your other post tonight is amazing.

What is the yearly charge for Smugmug, or do they have a free service like Photobucket?

Cooter, you scared me, so I checked th PB site and the old site is still there too. Sure you didn't hit the wrong tab? The tabs for the new site are a lot bigger.

When I went earlier in the day the old one was there.  Then I did a weekly cookie cleaning and when I logged into PB it came up with the new version and I couldn't find any way back to the old one like I could before.

I sent an email and got back a note from the robot saying that the old version was not available anymore.

Just went back and tried again--no go.  New version only and I could find no way to get to the old version.

Linking a picture to a forum is now a three click process instead of one.  Not a huge deal but still more of a PIA, particularly since the whole thing seems to take longer to load.

Heres a thought. If a member of Facebook you can create a private photo album where you can store photos. You can then "copy" any photo and then go to UJ and post a photo the using the IMG button.

It's reasonably easy and I use that when I haven't loaded a photo I want to post to my UJ server/photo folder.

If two extra clicks on PB bother me what makes you think I'm going to deal with Facebook?

I'm a cranky old man and I like it!

Just this am thinking I'd do a rare post on recent trips to the borderlands I got completely fed up with Photobucket user unfriendliness and horrendous upload times.  Does it not like Macs?  I swear I'm not an idiot.

Brad's suggestion of using a private Facebook album sounds promising. That'll be my next attempt. I'd sure like to post photos more often here.  Bill

Thanks, the Chuk pic was pure luck.

I believe it was $60

I agree with you aboout the "new" Photobucket.  It is horrible for lots of reasons - the only good thing is simpler uploads.  But, I opted to stay with the "old" Photobucket, which has served me well and continues to do so.

If I am forced to switch to the new Photobucket in its present form, I think I will have to look elsewhere.  Sadly, I'd lose years of well-organized, uploaded stuff (I have the full size files for each pic on my computer, but uploading all of that again would be a major PITA).

Tom Gordon (and anyone else), why do you recommend Smugmug?  Any other recommendations (not Facebook!) for a good photo hosting site?

Just got back from AZ and still have the old PB but with a message saying they will be switching to the new PB in 20 days. Going to try getting these pics posted before the change. Like Greg, if they switch over to the new, I'll probably be looking for another place.

If you are still able to use the old PB, DO NOT log out or clear cookies.  I was able to use the old version until I did that.  Now it won't let me go back and use the old version.

Here's the full text of the response I got when I emailed to ask them if I could still access the old version:

"We are no longer providing the option to opt-out of the new Photobucket website.

Our engineers need to focus on shutting down the old site, so that work can be done to finish optimizing the new one. Shutting down the old site will allow us to speed up the new site dramatically, and provide us with more time to work on features. Our engineers have worked hard over the past few months to get many of the same features added to the new site, while also providing a few new ones. Some of the features you used previously may not be available just yet, but they'll be coming very soon.

If there's a feature that you can't find currently, please check the 'Current List of Missing Features' article, as this will display all current features that have yet to be added. We'll be updating this article often, as we continue to roll out new features every few weeks. http://photobucket.zendesk.com/entries....eatures

In addition, feel free to peruse the help articles available on http://photobucket.zendesk.com for questions you may have about or Beta site.

I apologize if there's a feature you're missing that's not currently available. If you feel that there's a feature we've missed, please let us know what you need, and we'll do what we can to provide you with information on whether that feature is planned for the new site.

Please note that I am but a humble, automated robot whose sole mission it is to please you. If my response didn't address your concerns, please write back with what you need, and that you'd like to speak with of my human counterparts, and they'll be sure to get you the personalized assistance that you need.

Thank you,"

Tom Gordon (and anyone else), why do you recommend Smugmug?

I could see image quality issue's with Photobucket (especially sharpness) so I put it to a test. I took several same photo's hosted by each site & did a side by side comparison and let the viewer here at UJ choose the image for quality. Smugmug won everytime hands down

Piss poor image quality hosted at Photobucket. It wasn't always the case and I'm not sure why it changed, had some email conversations with them but it was never resolved so I moved on.
