      WELCOME NEW UJ MEMBERS   06/25/2017

It seems the word is out and UJ is enjoying a steady stream of newly Registered Members. Welcome to all of you, and we are all looking forward to your positive participation. I strongly suggest you review the Board Guidelines that have been in place since 2002. The most significant thing being that UJ is a NO POLITICS BOARD. LInk:  UJ BOARD GUIDELINES   Also UJ stays afloat mainly through Member Donations. Once a Donation is made you are placed in the Contributing Member Group with extra Priviliges. I am getting very few new Donations so hopefully this will spur that on a bit. Link:  New Members/Donations/Priviliges

2017 Photo Thread.

As many of you know the wild predictions of a healthy grouse population greeting hunters this fall in MN and WI were off the mark. Nesting success was a bust thanks to heavy rains and cool temps. This fall marked my 58th year chasing birds around the balsams and few were seen, even fewer provided an opportunity for a shot.  They (the birds) seem to know when propagation of their species has failed and survival skills kick in. Let’s hope enough survive the winter to breed again.

Below are some pics I took while ambling about the woods in October. The first photo was taken while teetering on the edge of a beaver dam which I had to cross in order to reach a trail through prime grouse cover… one misstep and I’m either soaked or battered.  Note the duck blind platform to the left of center in the beaver pond. This is private property which I’ve been given access to because I am interested only in feather and not fur.

In the second photo I am standing on the edge of a two-track; below my feet a culvert blocked by debris piled up by those busy rodents. Lots of water backed up with some flowing over the road. The third a warming shack deep in the woods along twisted trails of a ski trail. A marker at the entrance of the ski trail suggests someone died doing what he/she loved to do in the fourth photo. I have a thing for old trees and this old maple in the last photo is still there every year I visit this obscure woods opening that few hunters know about

If filling your bag limit is your goal I hope you’ve had better success. God willing, I’ll be at it again next year.

Merlot and I rambled around our Deer grounds this afternoon and bumped into the low 20's. In rifle range, but stretched the limits of the pocket camera.

This one stood out in the sun and posed for more than a little.

The guy was guarding his girls.

Later when 2 other Bucks came down off the hill and started to crowd his space he moved them off.
