Lepto Vaccine

Recommended Posts

Is this pretty much standard for young dogs now?  I can't remember  my other dogs receiving it and figured I'd ask as the Vet acts like its optional.

Most vaccines are optional.  I could be wrong but I think rabies and distemper are the only ones required legally.  I asked my vet, who also hunts and has dogs, what he gives his animals.  So mine got the lepto vaccine among others.

My vet says he gives it to most dogs around here, especially if it's a field dog.

Like most vaccines it's not 100% effective.  My Traveller got really sick a couple of years ago and the internist was quite sure it was lepto.  Of course my neighbors love raccoons for some reason and feed the nasty little things.

Even thought it's not 100% I'd still give it to the dog.

I give it to them at 15 weeks. It's in the 7 way shot that includes parvo, so it doesn't cost me more than $1 extra.

if i remember correctly lepto has many different strains that vary area to area so if you area traveling to a different region of the country another version may be a good idea, ask you vet about that

If I remember correctly there are 12 different strains of lepto.  Most shots only protect against 4 strains. Vet also told me the vaccine only protects dog for as little as 6 months and max of 12. Depends on the dog I guess. One of my pointers had a reaction to the lepto4 vaccine, so not really sure if the risk reward is worth it. Also, my understanding is the vaccine doesn't prevent lepto it just tones it down if the dog gets it.

My dogs and I spend a lot of time puttering about beaver dams, rivers, and streams all summer long.  I opt for the vaccine.

Do it.  Lepto is a problem for field dogs.

My vet said that if my dog was going to be running in the field/woods he should have the Lepto shot.

here's more

So, what exactly is the benefit of the lepto vaccine?

Not only is infection not prevented, but because symptoms are less severe, you may not notice that your pet is very ill. You might think your pet has some gastrointestinal upset which will pass. Instead of seeking veterinary care early on in the disease process, the infection will brew, causing permanent bodily harm.

Without early detection, leptospirosis is very difficult to treat!

I wouldn't go with a "holistic vet" recommendation for a field dog.   Unless you can keep your dog from lapping up water in every stock tank, creek and pond, I would vaccinate.  I now of a bird dogs, unvaccinated , that died of leapt.

Very enlightening blog by The Terrierman. Thanks for posting that Leonk.  Seems my entire career has been a shameful money grubbing scam.
