North Central SD Pheasant Report

Recommended Posts

bigjohnsd

Eleven days afield, cooler than normal weather, quite dry then frozen. Only a skiff of snow now gone.

Pheasants were scarce, of the 16 birds I shot only two were Birds of the Year.

Plenty of hens encountered.

Many farmers were not allowing hunting in their land to enable population to recover.

I saw few other hunters afield.

I believe that the potential for population recovery is good with cooperative weather in the nesting, hatching, chick bug eating season next year.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised as the dire predictions of the SDGFP preseason survey were worse than what I experienced afield.

I've been hunting every day for the past two weeks in central SD. Numbers are lower but hunting is still good. I'm averaging 2.4 roosters per day. I'm very happy. I never pay much attention to doom and gloom pheasant reports anyways. Weather was cool but now almost 50* through the week. Dogs are loving it.
