Remo and Lars I wouldn't trust Idahos F&G on quail There are quail in the Big Wood river drainage now. They have moved northward quite a ways from the F&G maps I hunt them not all that far from the craters area.

See them in Pikabo and Carey regularly so they're probably around Craters too? Isn't the season closed that far north though? Wish they'd move East!

A few from this week.  Young Ms. Joy in action:

1-18-18 - Joy in action - 1

1-18-18 - Joy in action - 2

The Chaser at work.  Not bad for 14+.

1-18-18 - Chase in action - 1

Grouse 28 going after a scarce ringneck in this hollow with Drummer up front and Ti catching up:

1-18-18 - Dave with Ti and Drummer - 2

Chase retrieves the only bird of the day (note Ti and Drummer in the background).  Joy probably worked that bird for ten minutes and 300 yards, before it held long enough for me to huff and puff up and flush it.

1-18-18 - Double dog retreive - 1

"OK... So here's the plan....  You take the butt, Chase, and I'll 'help' by carrying the head"

1-18-18 - Double dog retreive - 3

I fell under the spell of the super-light little 28 gauge a400 again today - like not even carrying a gun:

1-18-18 - Today's bird with the 28 gauge

Hope you enjoyed coming along.

2017 was a tough year for hunting.  Didn't get out hunting much at all with everything going on between work, the wife and the kids.  Got out for grouse twice, ducks once and geese 3 or 4 times.  My favorite memory though is from a very quick grouse hunt. I got off work a bit early and had an hour of daylight.  On a whim I ran home to grab the dog and gun and went to a small access road 20 mins from home.  It's a quick hunt and only takes 20-30 mins to walk it.  We were nearing the end of the trail and had no contacts.  Literally within the last 40 ft of the trail Jake flushed a big ruff to the left of the trail.  The bird exploded into the air and flew straight across the trail in front of me.  I had no time to think and before I even really grasped that a bird was in the air I felt the recoil of the gun and the bird fell into the cover on the right hand side of the trail.  I looked in that direction stunned until I realized Jake was sitting there staring at me intently.  I said "Jake" just loud enough for him to hear and he dove into the cover.  Panting and hot he appeared out of the thicket with bird in tow and came to my feet where I snapped this photo before taking the bird.  There was nothing overly special about this hunt but it was just one of those ones I know I'll always remember.  Time stood still as the sun was getting low in the sky and everything unraveled as if from a textbook.

Maggie dog ran hard in 6" of snow today, but all we found were tracks of a ghost. The season is winding down here in Ohio - but we're not done just yet.

Wildcat

awesome pics Greg! That photo of the 2 pups carrying the same bird reminded me of my girl Belle. She would always want to 'help' carry Doc's birds or even try and take them from him. He was such a softy he would let her most of the time :)
