Want to see Snyder destroy that behemoth from MI. He's giving up 60lbs I believe the guy from MI has only beaten him 2 or 3x should be a war

Penn State has been a great team for a really long time - hope they come through again.  I prefer this tourney and frozen four over basketball.  At least we know we're seeing real student/athletes in these sports at he college level.

Actually the real NCAA tournament is the first week of April when the Frozen Four takes place in the Twin Cities. I wonder if UMBC has a hockey team. You gotta love any team called the Retrievers.

Our small town has never had a HS wrestler go to state until this year. A good boy that has been friends with my son since kindergarten won 3rd in the state last weekend in his weight class. You've seen him before in hunting pics with my son. He's the smaller one on the left, but is tough as nails. He barely cracks 100lbs. It was heartening to see the greeting the town gave him last Saturday night as he and his coaches returned from Columbus. He was escorted into town by two police cruisers, a fire truck, and about 30 cars. People lined the streets with signs and about 150 greeted him at the gym. It's nice to see support like that. He's a smart, hard working boy. He's also part of the "needy family" I've mentioned taking venison for, so I hope his skill at wrestling gets him some help going to college. He has one more year to win state HS champ.

Yes penn State has had a super team for awhile now. I’m partial to Cornell. Their combined team gpa is around a 3.5. With kids in premed programs, quite a few in engineering and others in a wide variety of tough programs. These kids are the epitome of the student athlete.

Our son went there - fantastic school and location.  He graduated from the School of Engineering with a focus on Software Engineering.   The concept of the student athlete is alive and well in many schools.  It just seems to me to be inversely proportionate to top twenty standings when it just becomes "athlete".  PSU has particularly high graduation rates and academic achievement across their sports teams as well.

Absolutely great tourney again this year despite my Cowboys falling apart at every seam, its too bad the majority of people never even knew it was on due to a near complete lack of coverage by the sports media. A couple of years ago we were really hoping we would see more coverage with MMAs popularity helping boost the exposure to these athletes but unfortunately the media still chose to go with the ball sports instead of the greatest sport there is.

Got to watch 3 days in a row at the gym.  missed the 1st 1/2 of the finals, but what great matches the rest were!

Our high school team took 4th at state this year.  My son was varsity 138 but got sick the pm before so we stuck in our JV kid.  Great kid, but it did cost us n important match in the semi's.  My Ted did wrestle the final round & won.  We ought to be decent next year again... here's hoping!

God bless,

The problem with wrestling is wrestling.  By that, way too many people believe that what one sees with WWE and similar is actual wrestling.  Real wrestling is as tough as sport as there is, maybe toughest due to weight restrictions.  Seeing it live is a blast.  Pound for for pound, I put them up there with hockey players as being the toughest athletes out there.  Rugby has to be in the conversation too.

PSU, 7 of the last 8 championships in a very competitive landscape.  Other great schools such as Ohio State, Iowa and smaller schools keep it tough to win.  Next year the championships will be in PGH.  I'd like to combine a St. Pat's visit with the tourney if that is possible.

Jeff also many people don't understand the scoring system and definitely do not understand the technique involved let alone the sacrifices these athletes make every single year, what other sport for example would be cruel enough during Thanksgiving week to hold a major state duel, they do that here in Oklahoma and have since I was wrestling 30+ years ago. The grappling arts in general are really misunderstood because people don't want to learn about them be it wrestling of any discipline, Judo, BJJ, Sambo or others, they are genuinely a niche sport appreciated I find by people who appreciate the subtleties the techniques involve and the human chess match that is before our eyes.

Hammer,

I know John Smith is not happy with that finish. I would like to be a fly on the wall when he talks to his athletes and coach's. He is a great coach, so they will bounce back. It was almost sad watching Heil this year. From two time defending champ to not even placing. I wonder what happened? I wish him the best in his future endeavors. Will he continue to wrestle?

I grew up with John and his family and yeah I would love to be a fly on the wall, John is always a picture of composure but trust me he has his daddys temper LOL.. I have zero idea honestly what could have happened, I keep close tabs on the program and know coaches from several D1 and D2 schools and we talked about that this weekend, without John around of course, we placed 4 All American wrestlers but the season overall was definitely plaqued by injuries and odd setbacks, but Iowa State as well had an odd year placing even lower than we did. Our regular season despite the injuries went well winning the Big 12 but dang that was the second lowest placement since John took the reigns there.
