Have to brag a little

I apologize in advance if you already saw this on my FB page.

Back around May, I was considering moving a young male that had been here for a few months. On a bit of a whim, I offered him to my then 8 year old daughter.  She had already done a large amount of the work with him up until that point - working him on leashing, line steadying him to dummies, etc. The contingency to my offer was that it would be her dog to care for and train - I wasn't going to be responsible for him. She gladly took on the responsibility, and got after it hard all summer long.

Most evenings after work I would give her training suggestions, and when it came time to run him in the field I coached her on handling. But she did the work.

They both progressed extremely well over the last couple of months (there were plenty of hurdles), so I let her run him in a couple of puppy stakes this past weekend. Puppy stakes aren't too demanding because the cover is generally light and there is no bracemate to contend with. Dogs still have to be steady to flush and retrieve shot birds on command. When my daughter found out that there were 9 puppies entered the first day and 7 the next, with a number of them being handled by pros that she knows well, she was a bit concerned. It was totally unfounded though. She did a great job handling both days, and Boom did what he was supposed to do, and they walked away with a couple of blue ribbons. It was a very proud moment for me, and she was absolutely thrilled!

Some pictures from the two days:

If I was a judge and she showed up with a cat I would have still gave her the blue ribbon.

I agree with you, but she sure wouldn't appreciate hearing that! Actually, both judges made a point of coming up to me afterwards to let me know she earned every bit of it, and that they'd judged her dog no differently than anyone else in the trial.
