This song reminds me of a black man I worked with in tooling in 1973 at North American Rockwell. His name was Joe Tate and he was in his 60s then. He told stories of a time before the war when he and a couple of others would make extra money on weekends by going to roadhouses in the south and offering to entertain with dancing and music for tips and meals. This was apparently a common practice then and there. There was no bitterness in him as he told this, that's just the way it was then. He said they were treated well but did have to eat in the back room after. Another slice of Americana.

Jerry Jeff Walker grew up in the area I now call home . I used to say to folks around his age - hey did you know JJ Walker ? They all did in small town USA.  Everyone said he was good guy !

For that genulman in Georgia.

If anybody's wondering what the cabin-crazy-canuck is talking about, it's because I sent him this scan a while back:

This one'll really drive him nuts.

Note the Section Row and Seat and the relative positions in space of Messrs Grappelli and Brown on the seating chart.  Old Hong cain't stand it.  If you can't see it, that's second row dead center...

At my age, I can't muster much gusto, and what little I have I save for the female of the species.

And hell. it was 16 bucks!

Yeah, I'm a total dickhead.

I love this great, great song by Steve Goodman. This is the America that once lived in my imagination.

I saw Steve Goodman at the "Earl of Old Town" when I was in my twenties. The place was a walk up brownstone and people were packed inside, out the door and SRO on the porch and stairs. He was that good.
