Most of the movies listed here are definitely big budget, though they are great! One of my all time favourite small budget movies has to be “House of Games” with Lindsay Crouse and Joe Montegna, directed by David Mamet. He said "or" What's considered low though? I just looked up the budget on the movies I recommended because I thought they were little know or under appreciated, as well as a few others that I thought would be low. All I can say is WOW making movies ain't cheap. Clerks is probably the best value that's been posted so far, it was shot for like $20 something thousand.

It is a really complex story told well and beautifully shot. Again, I can't recommend it enough.
bruski
No doubt about it. Low budget by LOTR director Peter Jackson. (His first film). The perfectly titled "Bad Taste". Aliens, exploding sheep and obligatory gore. What more could you want?
bruski
Or possibly "Cannibal Woman in the Avocado Jungle of Death". A feminist retelling of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". More or less.

topdog1961
I liked "Tucker & Dale vs Evil" so much I gave it a shout out on it's own thread recently. This thread is where the hidden gems are. Another is "Fundamentals of Caring". Tremendous movie. "Mud" got some attention, and a thread of its own here, but not nearly the recognition it deserves.

T-Bone
Sling Blade with an over the top performance by Billy Bob Thorton is one I almost forgot about...Billy Bob's voice in character still sticks with me. Robert Duval does a memorable cameo, as well.

This was the only movie from this thread that I could find that was free to watch last night. It was an OK movie. The only quotable line is "They chopped off his bowling fingers!"
