Top Ten all-time Westerns?

Recommended Posts

Chukarman

Reading the film post, I remembered my training partners and I have an on-going topic, trying to pick the best 10 Westerns of all time. What would your choices be? For us the list keeps moving around. Tough to just have ten favorites.

Being a child of the 70s and 80s, I never have been enamored with the "old" westerns. "Unforgiven", "Tombstone" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" would definitely be on my list though.

True Grit. I really like Open Range for a modern Western. Looking forward to catching Hostiles soon.

I don't think I can rate them in any particular order, and I know I'll forget some, but here's 10 I'll watch every time they're on:

1. True Grit, the original (I did enjoy the remake)

2. The Outlaw Josey Wales

3. The Man who shot Liberty Valance

4. The Cowboys ( Bruce Dern, the villain!)

5. The Shootist

6. Unforgiven

7. Open Range

8. Silverado (pure entertainment)

9. Tombstone ( "I'll be your huckleberry" )

10. Big Jake ( " I thought you was dead... ")

I could probably come up with 20 more. Always loved westerns, and watched just about every John Wayne movie made. Great thread, thanks for starting it as I'll love to hear what others say

"The Searchers" w/John Wayne needs to be on the list. Inspired by the story of the captive Cynthia Parker (can't say "based on" because the John Wayne movie is pure hollywood). The Empire of the Summer Moon best seller fleshes out the story of the end of the Comanche domination in Texas. I'm suprised there has never been a movie about Cynthia's son war chief Quanah Parker. And as far as I'm concerned the book/mini series "The Son" rips off the Summer Moon book.

7.    Magnificent 7

8.    Wild Bunch

9.    Centennial I know it was a mini series but still a great western

10.  Winchester 73

I guess Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, Zorro, Wild Bill Hickok, Sky King, Bat Masterson, et al don't count. Back in the day on a Saturday morning, I could watch one western after another.

Not sure why but I have never seen a John Wayne movie that I could watch in its entirety -- just too damn boring.

I do like Tombstone, Lonesome Dove and most any Clint Eastwood western.
