Top Ten all-time Westerns?

Recommended Posts

Curt

In my opinion any list of best westerns that doesn't include 'the wild bunch' is incomplete, all the others are open to debate.

Virgil beat me to it.

All of the others listed are great. I might have missed it but didn’t see Rooster Cogburn mentioned. Comanche Moon (Lonesome Dove prequel) was good, but I like Quigley Down Under and The Man From Snowy River also.

Broken Trail with Robert Duvall, top notch. I mean, Smallpox Bob, really.

In no particular order:

    Unforgiven

    Open Range

    The Shootist

True Grit (original with John Wayne)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (great soundtrack)

   The Magnificent Seven

   The Gray Fox

Lonesome Dove ( miniseries for TV but....)

Quigley Down Under (Australia but a western nonetheless)

Answering as asked with my Top Ten in order*:

Open Range

The Searchers

High Noon

Shane

Fort Apache

Destry Rides Again

Liberty Valance

The Unforgiven

Stage Coach

Hombre

Honorable mention because it was so damn funny and a great spoof of the big budget/big screen 50's/early 60's Panarama westerns such as The Big Country:  A Million Ways to Die in the West

Does Last of the Mohicans count as a western?  It was "west" of civilization in its era even though it took place in NY state.

*  This order could change any second.  B|

Can't believe no one has 'Paint Your Wagon' yet:D

Actually anything with Clint Eastwood in a western I'm watching.  I guess I grew up too late as I do like John Wayne but I end up turning the channel on almost all of them eventually.

Also surprised "Young Guns" hasn't been mentioned yet.  I like that one.  Don't think I could pick just 10.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid  "Is that you Woodcock?"

Oxbow Incident

My Darling Clementine

All the above started popping up in my brain pan...

...maybe this is a start to my next top 10?

El Dorado > Rio Bravo

The Cowboys should be on the list

Conagher with Sam Elliot

Wayne & Clint really just need their own category

TV Movie, "The Sacketts" with Selleck, Sam Elliot, Glenn Ford and Jeff Osterhage. Not a great movie artistically speaking but somehow it has wormed itself into my consciousness so much that I will watch it whenever I see it anywhere!

I would not say the same for John Wayne's movies.

Did anyone mention "A Man Called Horse? or Jeremiah Johnson?"
