Social Media?

Here are my thoughts on "social" media. 1. It's anything but social 2. People say things they'd never dream of saying face-to-face. Anti political correctness has become an excuse for plain old bad manners. 3. The only political discussions are of the " I'm right and you're mentally ill for not agreeing with me" variety. 4. I've been to a Wal Mart often enough that I have found out, up close and personal, what the other shoppers look like. 5. I wouldn't use twitter because anyone who'd be interested in what I think from minute to minute on any topic isn't anyone I'd care to associate with. My opinions ain't that enlightening!

 Right on!

Tell me why I ought to care what some kid still wearing their pajamas down in their basement room thinks about anything? Or even some real actual friends? If my friends, real, actual friends, want to tell me, they will tell me.

Today my best friend of 25 years just surprised the $### outa me by explaining how the design of the now ancient and long obsolete USAF F-86 Sabrejet fighter was taken from the German ME 262, the world's 1st operational jet aircraft.  And it was.

Why should I pay any attention to what someone who eats 90% of their meals at Micky D's thinks about the food at the XYZ Super Fine Drink and Dine? ETC ??

  Damn waste of time.

Facebook I can not stand.  I do like Instagram though.

I am the complete opposite, two years ago I was very active on IG but the constant spamming by IG models and Russian porn masters has pretty much driven me from there. I'm fairly active on FB keeping in touch with friends and several hunting an MMA groups I was coerced into it by a friend 8 years ago when he said a bunch of people from High School were asking where I was at and now hardly see them. I am fairly active on Twitter in MMA and music promotion but even it has reduced over the last year. My decline on forums started when I lost Bubba several years back and honestly the depression of it and all the memories of people who knew us over the years really got me in a dark place and I just quit visiting them.

My wife just got a video on her FB feed taken by students from inside the Florida school shooting. I was just treated to the sounds of gunfire and screams of dying children in my bedroom on Valentine's night. Nuff said....

I can't believe she would even want to click on that.

On Facebook and Instagram. FB to keep up with family as we are scattered across North America and Instagram to help build my outdoor writing and photography business.

Unfortunately, those two platforms are required evils in my business. You just need to balance things out, choose the pages to subscribe to. I also use FB to keep up with Veterans issues here in Canada as that seems to be the most effective means of connecting us across Canada. FB can be amusing at times too. So far I have avoided twitter.

To further elaborate on my opinion of social media, I would hate to be growing up in today’s environment.  I was heavy as a teen, not until after college did I lose 75 pounds and start participating in endurance sports.  And I’ve never been accused of being an overly handsome man.  From personal experience I know there have always been uncaring, hurtful teens, but their megaphone only reached as far as their voice carried. With snapchat, Instagram, twitter…etc. it now carries to an entire community.  I get firsthand exposure to this through my two children.  I have a teen son who has a learning disability, but is wiry and handsome enough to get lots of attention from girls.  I have a daughter who is very smart, also a real beauty in my and many others eye, but she will never be a size 2.  I’ve taught her to not respond, or if she does, with dignity and grace, to vicious comments about her size from other girls on social media.  But it hurts when she comes into our room in the night, crying, asking her mom to come sleep in her bed so they can talk about the latest attack.  We even have parents contacting us to apologize for things their daughters post. The world would be better off without social media, IMO.

Edit: I will add that my daughter was voted homecoming queen from among a court of skinny girls. That REALLY set off a firestorm on social media.

Your daughter's classmates are to be commended for their impeccable taste in Homecoming Queens!

Teenage girls can, unfortunately, be the most soulless, self absorbed creatures on the face of the earth!!

I use it to keep up with friends who are on it and see whats new.  Being retired I have lots of friends who still work and it allows me to keep current on who is working where and doing what.  I also belong to various Dog Training forums and various doublegun forums.  There is a Fox forum on there as well where I can see lots of interesting Foxes.   I have a closed account which means I only see stuff from friends and if some of my friends get to political I delist them as friends.  Probably go on there a few times a day.  My wifes college roommate lives about 8 miles from the shooting yesterday and I quickly got on to make sure they were ok as both her and her son teach at a High School in the area.   There is a pile of crap on it for sure and no one is regulating it the way it needs to be regulated.

I finally broke down and opened a FB account last month. There is simply good information there that I can’t get elsewhere. My bird dog club keeps information up to date there but only has general info on its website. And a group of kayak fishermen who focus on my favorite bay post daily activity. And members of our housing association in FL have a Facebook site that isn’t under control of the board (lots of interesting stuff there).

I have yet yet to post anything on FB, and I much prefer it here, but there was just too much good information there to miss out on.

I am on FB. Post much of the same bird hunting stuff there that I post here. FB helps me to stay connected with my family and friends as well. It is self regulated and needs no outside regulation.

I am staying at my daughter's and here are a couple of my grandsons pics I posted on FB yesterday. I normally don't post pics like these on UJ.

some what related, any fans of ancestor.com, and any success stories?

That would make a real good separate Topic. I've wondered the same thing.

For me, and close relations it has been a life changer, I am old enough to remember microfiche, hours of hands on research, and paying fees to "experts" not

very productive, I think most people are curious about where they came from, and whatever happened to "old what's his name" well now you can find out, [may be].

Being originally from Pike county KY, I could find some Hatfield's or McCoy's in my ancestry. Or maybe both. Maybe that's why I'm always upset with myself.
