When I lived closer to birds, I could justify a little 4x4 pickup, and I loved the stupid thing.  I camped in it, hunted out of it, and kept my fly rods in there all year long.  Used to get it stuck o

Yup, the extra ground clearance is needed more than the 4x4.    That said, my first car was a 1982 Dodge Omni bought for $600 in 1987.  I drove that thing down every dirt road in southern Ma

I killed more birds and hunted farther from home when I only had my Vibe.  I also never got stuck and as my girls used to say "dad takes his car where cars aren't supposed to be"  I put 1 1/2" taller

These days I'm about 3 hours from grouse hunting and about 45 minutes from woodcock or stocked pheasants, and I'm driving a Honda Fit.  ... two canoes just fine, too.

Two canoes on a Fit.   That must be a sight...

(I have a small - very small- canoe trailer I can stack two canoes, one on top the other, and tow with my Miata.  Tow them up, 15 hours, to the bwca - just fine.

Of course I could actually live quite comfortably like any other city guy with a 1 wheel drive "sport utility vehicle".

If only they had a 1963 Pontiac Tempest with the limited slip differential.

And presuming axles or components could not be/were not ever swapped in or out in the 40 years since the cars were built.

I don't need it for any of my bird hunting spots as we park off walk in lots or along gravel roads. I have it, but grew up without it and never really cared. I do 98 percent of what hunting, fishing and trapping I do without the need for 4x4.

Farm stuff over the years is a different story!

Ironically, a coworker named Vinny called me today as he was on the road:

Steve?  Vinny.

Where are you?

Driving in rural Georgia.  Steve, I'm on a dirt road with cotton fields on both sides.  This is not a place for someone named Vinny to be.

You aren't driving a metallic mint green Pontiac Tempest are you?

Did Vinny catch the reference ?

He did....took him a second but he was howling.  I advised him to avoid any convenience store situations and anything named  "The Sack of Suds"......
