john mcg
Toni's '12 has developed a low frequency noise outback. Sounds like aggressive tires do on asphalt. I am thinking a wheel bearing, but not sure. Gonna get it check out today--I hope. Only 79K miles. I thought it might have been tires, but the new tires didn't change it. Dogwood
Could be the rear diff also. Hope not.

RayB
Have you ever run two different size tires on the back? That will ruin a rear diff faster than that chili will a first date

BTW---I had an appointment today and it was determined to be the left rear wheel bearing. $280 L&M. Gonna be done at 8am tomorrow. There is a trustworthy garage around the corner. chilly460
Wheel bearing will usually be fairly constant whether or not you are on the throttle and sometimes can change as you turn left/right, diff bearing will change with throttle input. Sounds like you got it figured out anyway.

It was harder to put stress on one side of the other enough to hear the difference, but the hill thing helped.
