Another one bites the dust

Whenever I catch a pike, it looks just like this...except that’s my blood. Just can’t seem to keep my fingers away from those teeth and even their gills will slice you open.

I use a Clam Nanook model. It would be a tight fit for 2 men but with just the 2 dogs and myself it works fine. Light weight enough that you can pull it by hand and simple to heat with a Buddy Heater

We have a gang buster yellow perch bite going on right now. The bite starts just before noon and you are done in a half hour with one rod.     They aren't big but are sure good eat

Now I know what a jumbo perch is!

Beautiful perch.

Does anyone eat the roe from those? My father used to love it but I can't even remember what it was like.

I don't care for roe myself but know a lot of people who tried it once.

I've been fishing the Mississippi River backwaters and the bite has been tough these last three weeks. Typical January slowdown. It will pick up in February.

That reminds me of a story.  Here in NW Ohio (but we usually drive over to the lakes in NE Indiana to fish) any bass over 5lbs from public water is a wall hanger, very rare. Several years ago a nephew and his buddy were ice fishing two adjacent holes. It was a weekend on a popular lake and the ice was crowded. My nephew landed a 5+ lb bass. People noticed the whooping and hollering. A couple minutes later his buddy hooked a big one. A crowd started to gather. It too was over 5. No sooner than it came out of the hole, my nephew hooked another. People started to cheer. Then the buddy landed another to much applause. They caught four largemouths between 5 and 6lbs in 10-15 minutes. Neither had ever caught even one that large before. They froze the fish with intent to get a stringer  mount, but when they learned the price, it never happened.

Nice bass there too, but that looks like a painfully cold hand. I have to quit long before my hands turn flaming red and purple.

Left the mountain tops in the morning to get the wife out fishing again, this time she had the hot rod.
