spring
While enjoying a beautiful morning quail hunting with my son, I had to pause for a minute of gratitude. There's a bit of work to put together what's here, but seeing my son enjoy it is truly the reason for it all. Any day out is a special day!

Greg Hartman
We've been gradually increasing the distance and difficulty of our daily dog runs as we slowly try to recover from the Covid. We did a couple of 2.5 mile runs, then two days ago did a 4 mile run to the upper most of the three little mountain lakes near the house. Decent amount of elevation. This is a 1906 building in the valley of the Hay Creek, which the brook that runs down from the upper lake helps to feed. Joy by the remnants of an old railroad bridge way back in the woods that once ran over the upper lake's little brook. Joy looking for ducks in the reeds at the lower end of the lake: Part of the upper lake: Nancy and Bliss at the lake: Bliss in the icy water: Yesterday, for the first time, we took a more normal daily dog run out at the big lake - Blue Marsh - maybe 5 miles or so with lots of rugged ground and lots of elevation. We had to stop and pant a number of times and our legs were screaming from lack of exercise, but we made it. Along this abandoned old road, Bliss suddenly locked up on a hard point, and Joy honored. I wondered what was going on as I walked up to the point. They held nicely and when I kicked the brush, a quail flushed!! Since there are no native quail, this had to be a left-over bird that someone had released for dog training. The dogs didn't know that and really enjoyed a surprise off-season point. I took a pic of Joy by the lake (which is drawn way down in winter for flood control): This was the exact same place where I took a picture of her on a run in hot, steamy July. Looks very different in January and July!
