Snuck in a couple woodcock hunts with the wife, really enjoyed her shooting birds over Mae in her first season.

at almost 14yrs old his career is over but a 20 minute walk on easy trails still produces fun now and again

Took an armed walk today.  More likely to see a giraffe than a phez in PA in late January, but why not?

1-28-21 - An armed walk today

Whitecaps on the big lake today:

1-28-21 - Dogs by the lake

Even though it was in the mid-20's, the dogs went swimming:

Got a nice point that got my heart pounding, but it turned out to be non-productive (there's a surprise....).

It’s my trusty 28, just in case.  Let’s just say it didn’t get much use today....

Gus and I and a friend with his two dogs closed out the season in Nebraska this week.  We did not shoot a lot of birds but we saw and/or heard plenty to keep us happy.

It was sunny, cloudy, warm, cold, windy, calm, foggy, and clear.  All of it was good.

Took another armed walk with Grouse28 yesterday.  It was cold and windy.  Did I mention it was cold and windy?

Of course, no birds were seen (we weren't really expecting to see anything).  This non-productive double-dawg point had my attention for a moment, nonetheless:

I thought  had fully regained my strength from the Covid, but we've been walking trails.  A couple of hours of pushing through super-thick greenbrier jungles yesterday  taught me differently,  Legs were screaming - still need some work to be fully back from the Covid, apparently.

Grouse28's handsome Jack afield yesterday:

😔 This was probably the toughest bobwhite hunt ever. Barrett's pointing was great. The Bob's were not of the gentlemanly sort, flushing wild and always on the back side of a tree. I got to hear a lot if birds flush.

I can relate to the hear 'em but not see 'em experience.  We found the birds feeding and sheltering in cedar breaks.  Some pheasants as well.  Very difficult places.  Made woodcock and ruffed grouse hunting seem easy.

Wow, our local dove season runs from Sept 1-30.  And until this year ended on Sept 15th.  But there are never enough doves to hunt after about Sept 3rd.  I'm jealous!

Season ends next weekend. Tried Saturday but all I got was soaked. Sunday was very windy making scenting conditions tough but found two new coveys.

This pic was taken from my knees as I did not expect to have a shooting opportunity. One bird made the mistake showing himself just long enough in an opening though.
