Desert critter - Coatimundi

Recommended Posts

One of many cool things found in the desert while out looking for quail - White-nosed Coatimundi (Nasua narica.) They're related to raccoons, and like coons they'll eat just about anything. Pronounced kuh·waa·tee·muhn·dee.

I was hunting in Arizona a long time ago and saw maybe 100 of them climbing on a cliff face it was a amazing sight. It looked like a bunch of monkeys till I got closer.

Are they a common sign or rare?

In the SW I think they are as common as raccoons elsewhere. The IUCN lists them as a species of "least concern."
