How to stop the lick?

We have a 6mth old Field Spaniel that can't be petted without licking whoever is petting him.  Saying no and pushing away didn't work.  Slap on the muzzle and NO didn't work.  I'm looking for suggestions.  I don't want a head shy pup.  But the none stop licking has got to stop.

My advice Viz, let it be. You don't want a pup with mental issues.

The lick is a submissive gesture.  He wants you (or whoever is petting him) to know that he won't be trying to be the boss.  You could try not bending over him, not petting him on top of his head, and try giving him something wonderful to hold in his mouth.  Try squatting down, petting him under the chin and keeping your torso upright and your shoulders back when you pet him.  Scolding or swatting will only make it worse because he is already trying to signal to you that he doesn't want to challenge your entitlement to be the leader and you are scolding him for doing that.
